Man, y'all could have just rezzed this thread instead. Wink

But Donkey Shane all the same. I'm another year older and still waiting on that SENS research. Think I should mail them a few bucks? Razz

(You know what would be a great birthday present, Wraith? The color Lime, added to that text color palette up there in the corner. Make me happy, girlfriend. I love you )

Well, I accidentally erased the reply that I had going here, so I'm going to keep it short. Friggin' Windows key and Favorites bar tick me off so much sometimes....

I've been in a pretty bluesy depressed funk ever since my birthday. I've been in a pretty bluesy depressed funk every birthday for the last eight or ten or so years. It's always the same horror story: past middle age, well past my prime, no love life, no wife, no kids, no $80,000 dream job and a three-story brownstone manor....

So maybe it had something to do with the Big Four-Oh staring me in the eye from a year away, but I finally got sick and tired of being sick and tired. "Self, this melancholy that dogs you every birthday hasn't done one damned thing to resolve its own cause. It's time to find that life mate, and soon."

So between tending the chickens (including the six new chicks that Mom and Dad got me for my birthday), clearing out over 3,000 automated "rejected spam" emails resulting from some Russian spambot(s) spoofing my email domain yesterday, and lugging lumber from the hardware store half a mile away, I registered with Match.com and its sister site (Chemistry.com) and filled out my profiles. I've already had six women look over my Match profile, but I can't do anything about them until I subscribe (translation: give the site money). So here are my options:

• 6 months at $20/month (read: $120). This includes Full Mobile Access, The Match.com Guarantee (find someone in six months or get the next six months for free), Email Read Notification, First Impressions (whatever that is), and Highlighted Profile. The mobile access isn't necessary because I surf the web on my home computer and not my cell phone. The email notifications aren't necessary because I'll be checking the site every day or three; yes, I'm that desperate. And the highlighted profile isn't necessary because hey, I live in a semi-rural area in East Texas. How much competition is there around here?

• 3 months at $23/month (read: $69). Like the above, but minus the Match.com Guarantee.

• 6 months at $17/month ($102). It's just full mobile access (which I don't need) and the Guarantee (which might not be a bad idea).

• 3 months at $20/month ($60). It's just mobile access...no other frills there.

• 1 month at #35/month. Yeah, like I'm really going to land my future wife in the first month....

All of these plans get the same list of extra goodies...send messages, reply to messages, see who has viewed you and get suggestions on who would be the best match for you. So a big part of the decision here amounts to gambling: how long is it going to take me to find Miss Right on this site?

This is definitely the most serious internet dating site I've used to date. I've tried a stupid quiz site masquerading as a date site (a site which I wouldn't trust to help me pick out a dog, let alone a steady girlfriend...), and I've tried Various Inc's sites (which aren't so much "Find your true love" sites as they are "Find someone to have sex with" sites, and I'd have to estimate that 80% of those sites' clients are men, as evidenced by the endless parade of scuzzy and aggressively gay 60-year-olds invading my Inbox to show me photos of their dongs...not what I'm looking to spend my life with, thanks).

So have any of you tried Match or Chemistry? Probably not, since all of you are either married or engaged (and I envy the hell out of every last one of you for that...), but it doesn't hurt to ask, right? Neutral

Anyhoo, I can't guarantee that I'll be able to post tomorrow, since Mom's still in town and we're going shopping for Dad's birthday present. He turns 65 on the 29th of this month, he's retiring from hospital work, he wants a hammock and by Zeus he's going to get his hammock.

I'm still saving up for the laptop with WiFi, too. I haven't forgotten that. Wink

And I need bed, because I'm bushed and my shoulders are in pain from carrying all that lumber around. Hang in there, everyone. Sad

So true! Razz

Damn...just got home from Kaufman County and I hit two opossums on the way, going about 65 MPH for both of them. I nailed one with the tires and the other with what sounded like my drive shaft. I bet I roadkilled both of them, too. Rough night. Good thing they weren't wild hogs.

I really need to force myself to get back on this site and get back to the gym, because this gloom isn't doing me a bit of good. But hey, I just had five more women look over my Match profile today, and four of them looked pretty sweet. Maybe things are looking up. Smile

Anyway, I'm bushed, I almost got my two-wheel-drive Cavalier stuck in a mud patch, Dad keeps bumping me off the computer every chance he gets and my chook chicks were dumb enough to go out of the henhouse and get drenched while a storm was blowing through around 3 PM. Good thing I got them warmed up in time and kept them from going hypothermic. And my chickens apparently don't understand that, when the tornado sirens are screaming and I'm trying to herd all of them inside the henhouse, it might be a good idea to stay in there.

Chickens are stupid. But I love them anyway.

Okay, I'll try to wake up early. Sorry--again--for being such a slack-ass, peeps. Here's hoping I'm not twice the slugbutt when I hit 40 next year, eh? Sad

hey, go easy on my percoset riddled typing, you should feel lucky there were sentences.

also FYI, Global Agenda is fully free to play now, you can shell out a one time charge of $19.00 to get "elite agent" status that will give you normal xp and cash progression and (apparently) a better loot table than froobies get. it's kind of like team fortress with class progression (and with all of your new bells and whistles you "should" be able to play it.)

Yeah? Well, you'll always be one year ahead of me. Remember that! Twisted Evil

So for my birthday, I got a fancy dinner at the Four Winds Steakhouse, where a meal for one person can easily cost you upwards of $40. Trés fancy. Mom and Dad also got me a portable firepit like this one (but with stars instead of critters), because you know how we Texan folks like to burn stuff. Wink

Ah, thank you, Tiger. The Four Winds was quite the fancy place to eat; we would have paid $140 if not for the $100 gift certificate that my Dad's friend (who happens to be a pretty wealthy doctor) gave us. Smile

Speaking of fancy restaurants, where are my belated birthday wishes from Wraith? Razz

Is that "monster post-writer" as in "I post about monsters" or as in "I post posts that are monsters"?  Razz

But I thank you for thinking about me and my step up to the Big 4-2.  It kind of sucks that I'll still be in the academy for my birthday, but I graduate the next day, so it's all right.  Smile

And this is indeed it: the final week of academy.  And that entails firearms training (some revolver or other, the M4 assault rifle and the Remington 870P shotgun), firearms tests, a Defensive Tactics test and, finally, the graduation ceremony.  My parents will be attending, and I've already given them directions and passed on the rules (no bringing cell phones or tobacco products into the prison, no wearing anything white, no parking in any reserved parking spaces, et al).  And I'm also making a 3' x 2' wooden plaque for our sergeants, which set me back about $150 for materials and tools.  Between that and settling all of my April bills and outstanding debts, I've already spent $900 of this month's $1900 paycheck, which is a bit worrisome for me.  Time to tighten the belt again....

After that, things should cool down considerably.  Academy's been pretty frantic, but at least this last week will be devoid of studying and paper tests.  And once I get to my regular job, they're promising me that I'll be bored out of my skull.  But bored is better than frantic in my book.  Here's hoping that I can get back to some regular posting, especially if I invest some of next month's paycheck into my very first Smartphone.  My old Virgin Mobile cell phone doesn't work for a good 20 miles around the prison where I work, so it's now worthless and I'm due for a new cell phone anyway.

Also, I transferred my old Outlook Express folders to this computer, I started picking through my old emails and look what I found!  Blood and Ashes is still around, and I took a brisk trip down Memory Lane when I revisited this page.  I kind of miss playing Donna van Holtsen now, and I like to think that I did justice for a Tzimisce Antitribu character in playing her.  And since most of my old notes for Unquiet Waters and The Cabal are also in Outlook Express (mostly in the form of emails sent to myself) and I got to reading those notes again, I started to feel the pangs for those PBEMs too.  Sad

Anyway, thank you kindly for thinking of me.  I'm going to bed now so I can drive an hour out to the academy at 4:00 AM.  Have a good night, and I look forward to posting something next weekend (while relating the tale of my graduation experience).  Smile
